Discipline and Controlling the Emotions in Forex

Forex Market Analysis and Signals | Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Hello :)

As I see some of you are not happy with the positions we took last night. None of them have triggered any of the stop or target yet. My positions are still open. If you close all of them now you will be out with about -250 pips loss. I personally want to let them be open.

Please note that we should not expect all of the positions we take jump to profit and hit the target right away. That’s impossible.

The other thing is that when your positions are negative and you keep on checking them every minute, it becomes too hard to control the emotions. Your emotions take the control and decide. So you close your positions and take the loss and then the market follows the very first prediction you had. Or you make your stop loss tighter and let it take you out. Or some people make the original stop loss wider to give more time to the market to change the direction while it is going against them. This is not good. This is against two strict trading rules: 1. Discipline and 2. Controlling the emotions.

It is also the same as when you see the market is moving to your direction and you are in a nice profit. Then you decide to make your target wider or remove it completely and maximize the profit. I am not against maximizing the profit. I am talking about discipline. If your first analysis tells you that your target has to be 100 pips, don’t change it. Yes it is possible that you make 500 pips from that trade but when you change your decisions frequently and move your stop and target, it becomes a habit and you can never learn to have discipline and this will cause you to lose finally.

There are a lot of traders who have negative weeks or even months but they are still considered as good traders because they follow their signals and systems and have the discipline of keeping the positions.

Today signals will be posted in the below table at 17:00 EST which is 22:00 GMT. Make sure to be on time!

Announcement (05:50 GMT, 30th Jan): Ok! We are done for tonight. No more orders. Click here if you are late.

Note:

1. Read the disclaimer before you use the below buy/sell signals.
2. If you have not received the below signals on time, just compare the current price
with the entry price and do not take any position if the target is already triggered or the
price is close to it.
3. Please note that some of the below signals can be pending orders. So read all the explanations carefully before you take any position.
4. Cancel all the pending orders that are not triggered from the previous day.

Don’t worry my friend. Metaphorically speaking, you might have lost a battle yesterday but beware, based on past results, you’re still winning the war hands down! ;)

Statistics don’t lie. Just look at your past results: it must have been ages (if ever) since you ended a day with a negative gain (ie, loosing pips) .

Cheer up, and keep up the good work! ;)

Hi Forexoma,

I must point out that I am sure that most of us are not unhappy. I agree with you. I must say that I thought that taking 3 positions against the Yen seemed like a risk. I suppose if something happened that caused another “flight from risk” to the safe haven of the Yen and the Dollar, we would be caught with 3 trades in the wrong direction, but I have actually done exactly as you stated and left the trades. They may lose and that will not be great, but a loss is not a loss until it is realised and, as you state; you cannot expect every trade to go positive instantly and you will always lose some trades. The law of averages does not leave even good traders alone!

I am still happy that I am learning, the article on the Fibonacci numbers was most informative and fascinating, I have been trying it and it seems to be quite a good predictor. Strangely perhaps, it even seems to work quite well in the 5 minute range. I am most impressed, but still learning and experimenting.

Thanks,

Stuart King

Hi Forexoma,

That’s not a big deal in a game. We lose and we win for sure. What we have to prepare how we can get better trades tommorow. :-)

Good Job and Thanks much - Pria

No one is perfect, cheer up mate.

Your track record speaks for itself. Metaphorically speaking you might have lost one battle, but you’re still winning the war. Hands down, may I add.

Very true Forexoma, i am a victim of such weakness in discipline at times, it separates the traders who last in the long term from those who dont make it in the short term.

But if i had a bigger account, and more space to allow the markets movements to play out, i would have not made the decision to close out maually…since i know your analysis is based on years of expereince and it is traded according to your plan, and the stops you use are very hard for the hunters to hunt !

Happy days

steve

Perhaps everyone has noticed that all three of yesterday’s positions have bounced back nicely. I personally thought that the long term trends looked like they were bottoming out, so I doubled up on all positions, and am now in a profit on all three.

Forexoma, I also cut my losses to live another day on the Yen. Any quick comments on why it did’nt break the way you predicted? I noticed big movement in the Kiwi yesterday too. Is that a currency you watch and did you consider entering any positions with it yesterday?

Sorry, I retract my previous post. I didn’t realize that at rollover, my broker closes, then immediately re-opens my positions at the current price. So, my doubled positions are still in a loss, but I’ve adjusted my Take Profit price to reflect the lower cost average.

I goofed,
Dan

Hi Forexoma
I have been monitoring your signals all week - last night I started active trading with your signals. Bumpy start - but never the less I am still extremely grateful to have a Forex Mentor like you. I have made some real bas losses on my demo account over the last month. You’re trading history posted on the site show your exceptional skill - and I am very confident that we will bounce back next week with some good trades. This is the nature of the trade - a loss is inevitable.
I am from South Africa - so I set my alarm every morning for 12h00 to come and join the trading. I am looking forward to next weeks signals.
Thank you for the service you provide - I am very grateful.
Kind Regards
Eugene

Hi Eugene,

Thanks for your comment and sorry to hear that your first day of real trading was not good but as you said we will recover. I am not worried at all. Our months will be positive. I don’t like to make any promise but we make between 1000 to 4000 pips every month.

Best regards,
Forexoma

My broker doesn’t allow me to have a Trailing stop due to having a guranteed stoploss.

In this case, what tips can you give me to protect my stoploss in this way.

Hi Sean,

This is very easy. You have to move your stop to breakeven manually when the price moves for the amount of the trailing stop that I mention in the signals. You will have to watch your trades though.

Forexoma

does the trailing stop move the stoploss back down again from profit?

No; it should not do that.

I come across your website by accident, maybe because of the search and hunt for information and knowledge seeking for forex for the past 7 months and beginning to see a very little success with what I’ve put together from what I learned from books, articles, I think you are doing a wonderful thing here.
God bless you, thank you very much and wish you health and happiness and prosperity.
